Crafting a Flower

Le Xin was learning the theme on Plants in Carpe Diem so I thought of crafting something related to the theme she was learning, so there it is ---> Crafting a Flower...

Putting glue on a plastic cover

Amazed with the white glue she was using...

Next, she stuck the cover on a drawing board....

Squeezing the glue along the diagonal lines....

Pasting the cotton buds as petals...

She began to count as she pasted each cotton bud on the drawing board.... Good counting Le Xin!

Le Xin chose to use a  pipe cleaner to make the stalk...

I want to use pink said Le Xin excitedly

Le Xin wanted to paste her pink pipe cleaner using her white glue but she realised that it kept falling off so she decided to use.....

Scotch Tape.....some good pasting Le Xin :)

Le Xin took a piece of yellow cellophane paper and told me she wanted to use that to make the leaves.
She cut out the cellophane into a smaller piece and I used the piece she cut out to make two small leaves for her.

Applying the white glue to on the yellow leaf...

Pasting the yellow leaf on the drawing board...

Pressing the leaf again to ensure it was well attached to the drawing board.

All done.... A happy Le Xin with her flower :)

This is my 42nd entries under Aesthetic and Creative Expression, among these entries, many of them were our crafting experiences. Here's a little reflection on why crafting has become such an important part of our learning ? I personally find that crafting is not only a great way to past time, it is also an extremely powerful way to LEARN or educational you may call it! Why? Firstly, when young children engage in crafting, different skills were involved (fine motor, spatial awareness, scientific processes, math concepts, language development and list just goes on and on) Generally, I like how Le Xin and I could explore different ideas each time we craft and after crafting, not only do we look at the end product for visual pleasure, we also talk about the learning process involved when we revisit the experience using her blog.

Crafting has definitely helped Le Xin to extend her thinking across multiple intelligence, it develop her higher order of thinking when she brainstorm, suggest, make connections, apply, reflect and engage in critical thinking. Each time she completes her craft, she looks at  it with pride and satisfaction hence building her self esteem. Many at times,  Le Xin also learns how to focus, persevere and work towards a common goal with Mummy hence nurturing good disposition towards learning.

Each child's learning style is different, I can't assume every child enjoys crafting the way Le Xin does and I have to admit not all adults like crafting with young children too......but give it try you might not know that you could be unleashing some hidden talents in your child :)
